Only tournaments which produce an overall winner and have a minimum of three rounds are eligible to be counted for LTA RANKINGS purposes. LTA rankings tournaments are graded 1,2,3,4 and 5 depending on standard. Such competitions normally use "seeded" knockout draws meaning that the better players are segregated in the draw to prevent them from meeting in the early rounds. This can result in beginners meeting players of a much higher standard in early rounds.
Grade 6 events are official competitions which fall outside the RANKINGS system and therefore count for LTA ratings purposes but not for rankings. The one-day events in the TennisUK matchplay programme (matchplays.com) are grade 6 competitions.
Unlike rankings tournaments, matchplay events are NOT seeded and players are drawn with others of same or similar standard (based on LTA rating). This provides an excellent opportunity to take part in close and enjoyable matches against closely matched opponents.
