Collapse Matchplays/ONEMATCH Selection PolicyMatchplays/ONEMATCH Selection Policy
Collapse How are selections for TennisUK Matchplays/ONEMATCH events made? How are selections for TennisUK Matchplays/ONEMATCH events made?

We try to accommodate as many players as we can in our matchplay and ONEMATCH events although on occasions we have to limit the number of players accepted into an event, in order to keep sessions to a manageable size. In a standard matchplay event there must be at least THREE applicants of the same rating in order for that rating category to be considered.

In ONEMATCH events, a minimum of TWO players of the same rating are needed.

Where there are too many players of the same rating, then selections are made according to each player's TSUK Matchplay History Grade (MHG). Using a banded grading system, non-appearances and withdrawals (including players who retire from their first match in any event in the TennisUK One-Day Event Programme), will be less favourably considered. Players who apply for events and do not get selected will be more favourably considered. The system will operate in a similar manner to credit scoring and each player will be allocated a Matchplay History Grade ("MHG") on a weekly basis according to their recent history in the TennisUK One-Day event programme (including FAST4 events and LTA Winter County Tour event). Players with the highest grade will be selected first, followed by the 2nd highest grade and so on. Players of the same grade will be split according to application date and time.

Where we have to decide between accepting one ratings group over another, we take the average MHG of the players in each group into account and consider also when players of that rating category were last accepted for an event.

Collapse What is a Matchplay History Grade and how is it calculated? What is a Matchplay History Grade and how is it calculated?

Each week, our system analyses the participation record of all applicants in the TennisUK One-Day Event Programme over the preceding 8 week period. Using a points based calculation, players are allocated credit points where they have previously applied for events but have not been accepted. A higher number of points are applied to players who are accepted for an event but do not receive the expected number of matches (through no cause of their own). If a player is accepted for an event but we are forced to remove them due to their being no other players of the same rating OR an event is cancelled due to weather, then these players receive the highest number of points.

Conversely, if players withdraw from an event then points are deducted according to WHEN the withdrawal is made. Higher deductions apply to those players who withdraw DURING an event (including players who retire during an event and are unable to start a subsequent match. A player who fails to appear for an event receives the highest number of negative points.

Each player's weekly points total is converted into a grade (A+ to E-) and players with the highest grades are accepted ahead of players with lower grades. Please note that the points used in the internal calculations are entirely separate to LTA withdrawal penalty points and are used to determined acceptances in Matchplay and ONEMATCH events ONLY. However ALL events in the TennisUK One-Day Event Programme (including FAST4 events and Winter County Tour events) are counted towards a player's Matchplay History Grade.

Collapse Can I find out my MHG or see the calculations? Can I find out my MHG or see the calculations?
In consultation with the LTA we have decided NOT to publish details of the grading calculations nor players' Matchplay History Grades. However the same system is used for ALL players and no manual adjustments are made.
Collapse I withdrew from an event and the LTA have removed my withdrawal penatly points. Will this be taken into account?I withdrew from an event and the LTA have removed my withdrawal penatly points. Will this be taken into account?

No. Matchplay History Grading is entirely separate to the LTA withdrawal penalty system and the reason for withdrawal is not taken into account - only the date the withdrawal was made. The same system therefore applies to all players.

Do remember that whereas the LTA withdrawal penalty system works on a 12 month rolling period, the TSUK Matchplay History Grading only analyses a player's entry/participation record over the preceding 8 week period.

Collapse If I apply for multiple events on the same day but do not get accepted, will this improve my MHG?If I apply for multiple events on the same day but do not get accepted, will this improve my MHG?
Yes, credits are given for each event for which a player is unsuccessful or placed on a reserve list. A player does not however receive any credits if they make a late application for an event and are not accepted.
Collapse If I cancel from one or more events, before the cancellation deadline, will this affect my MHG?If I cancel from one or more events, before the cancellation deadline, will this affect my MHG?

No. However, this may be introduced at a later date, but we shall publish this in advance should we decide to take pre-deadline cancellations into account.

Collapse Will I receive credits if I cancel from a reserve list? Will I receive credits if I cancel from a reserve list?
Yes, if you decide to cancel from a reserve list then you will receive credits as if your application had not been successful.
Collapse If an event is permitting late applications and I enter but do not get accepted, will this help my MHG?If an event is permitting late applications and I enter but do not get accepted, will this help my MHG?

No. Only players who enter before the published application deadline will benefit if they do not get accepted. Otherwise, players could submit late applications to events where they have little or no chance of being accepted, purely to artificially inflate their MHG.

Collapse Will my MHG be taken into account for other TSUK competitions? Will my MHG be taken into account for other TSUK competitions?

No. Your "Matchplay History Grade" is an internal grading system and applies only to Matchplay and ONEMATCH events in the TennisUK One-Day Event Programme. However, all events listed in the TennisUK One-Day Event Programme count towards your grading including FAST4 events and Summer & Winter County Tour competitions.

Collapse I was accepted for a grade 4 event in the TennisUK One-Day event programme but have cancelled my application. What are my options?I was accepted for a grade 4 event in the TennisUK One-Day event programme but have cancelled my application. What are my options?

As soon as you are accepted for a grade 4 event in the TennisUK One-Day Event Programme - any other applications to other events in the programme on the same day will be cancelled automatically ["Cancelled (accepted elsewhere)"]. This to prevent players from holding places in two or more events to the exclusion of other potential players who may not have been accepted or were placed on a reserve list.

If you exercise your option to cancel from a grade 4 event following acceptance then you will NOT be reinstated into any other events you previously applied for on the same day and you will not be permitted to reapply unless you email us to request this. If we agree to your request then any re-application you make will be treated as a new entry with regard to the entry date and time. i.e. we shall not reinstate the application date and time back to when you originally applied. You will not be able to re-apply for events which have already closed for applications, regardless of whether you previously applied for such events.

This is to ensure that players who have been guaranteed a place in an event (but chose to cancel) are not prioritised over other players who have not been accepted for an event taking place on the same day.
